In an era of escalating threats, the development of new detection technologies is crucial for safeguarding critical infrastructure. Mark Jacobs, CCO of Optics11, highlights our company’s advancements and collaboration with the military to ensure maritime security in the North Sea. Recently he gave an interview to “Follow the Money” magazine.

Fiber optic sensing technology is a core of our solutions, and it has found significant applications in national defense. Fiber optic sensors detect underwater vibrations, which can indicate the presence of spy ships, drones, etc. This capability has drawn the attention of defense agencies since 2016. The interest has grown over the last years, as more concerns are rising around maritime security.

Recently, Optics11 has made substantial progress, collaborating intensively with defense forces. Our compact and lightweight towed array OptiArray operates in an extended range and provides enhanced sensitivity by identifying objects underwater based on their unique acoustic signatures. It employs advanced vibration sensors in a thin, garden-hose-like cable, and is more sensitive than traditional methods. These fiber optic hydrophones have been successfully tested with the navy, demonstrating their capability to monitor underwater infrastructure.
